Welcome to the Abbey Church of Saint Mary & Saint Helena, Elstow. I have had the privilege of being the Priest-in-charge of Elstow Abbey since November 2016 and love being part of our active and growing community.
One of my favourite analogies of the Christian life is that of joining a journey, or as John Bunyan would have called it, a pilgrimage. The word for pilgrim comes from the Latin per agri , meaning ‘through the fields’ – suggesting engagement, perhaps even going out of one's comfort zone.
I invite you to a pilgrimage with God and with his family; a pilgrimage full of potential, a pilgrimage of discovery, of growth, of hope, of intrigue, of faith, of adventure and of real life – with all its ups and downs – but lived out God’s way. The Bible is full of stories that explore this theme and at Elstow Abbey we would love to invite you to come and join us on this pilgrimage of life.
Father Paul Messam
If you live locally why not give us a try at one of our Sunday services and find out more for yourself? Coming to church for the first time can be a very daunting experience but please feel free to come as you are and join in at your ‘pace’. There are no rules at all about where you sit or how you dress or how much you need to understand about the Christian faith. Just come as you are and (even if the sermon doesn’t do anything for you!) enjoy a cup of coffee (often with some excellent cake) with us after the service.
My prayer is that your time with us will inspire you in your pilgrimage of faith and draw you closer to Jesus Christ as the one who offers ‘life in all its fullness’, as well as giving you a sense of belonging to God’s family.
We hope that you find the website both helpful and of interest. If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
